I am an artist that uses my knowledge of software engineering and AI along with traditional techniques to make pieces in different forms and mediums.
The rapid advances in artificial intelligence in the past few years have caused curiosity and fear about what the future holds. The future of information, jobs, and art have all been brought into question. I am interested in the ways humans and AI can work together and how this relates to the ways tools and automation have impacted us throughout history. This piece seeks to investigate the role AI might play in our lives and how the choices we make will impact this future. The images in the zine were generated by an algorithm, but I wrote all the words and designed the layout of the zine aided by Adobe Illustrator and spell check. Each zine in the collection was created with a different level of technological intervention and each one has unique mistakes and misgivings depending on how it was produced. I wanted to look into where we draw the line between a tool to help us get to a desired end and artificial intelligence. There is good reason to fear where the AI field is going, which is more reason to understand the pitfalls and dangers, specifically when it comes to what these algorithms are trained on.
My work deals with childhood and the way I—and many of my American peers—were raised. I seek to capture a bit of innocence, silliness, and messiness in my form and process. Additionally, I enjoy working with two-dimensional abstract forms and iconography. My work explores the combination of the two-dimensional and three-dimensional worlds in novel ways. I look at the connection between childish, simplistic forms and my own experience as a child. As a gen z adult, I think about how the internet, with its constant stream of content, has influenced the way I interact with images and art. This piece in particular, investigates the parent-child bond and the expectations parents put on their children to be successful under American capitalism. It seeks to ask questions such as, how do parents influence and shape their children? how do we view the role of a parent in society? And what are the expectations of the parent and the child in these relationships?
